oh_marvelous is an 18+ Marvel GPSL. It's slice-of-life jamjar AU, mixing 616 and MCU canon.
New York City was a pretty strange place to begin with, even before the super-humans and daily disasters. These days, danger is the status quo in New York, and even being suddenly trapped in the city by a strange energy barrier hasn't done much to rattle its jaded residents. Sure, it's inconvenient, but most people who've come to this city fight to stay and survive here, and they're not willing to give up. The monster-and-chaos spewing wormholes appearing around the city since the barrier came down are somewhat more alarming, but isn't that what super-heroes (and cape insurance) are for? This is just another catastrophe in a city with a rich heritage for super-human calamity. New York's natives are adaptable, they carry on with their lives beneath the barrier in a weird city that's now just become a whole lot weirder.
The New York barrier appeared simultaneously with the first, tiny rip in the fabric of space time. That first wormhole and the object that fell through it were the genesis of the barrier, appearing suddenly in the middle of 2015 over a particularly uninteresting area of Brooklyn (incidentally, at the same spot where the domed barrier has its apex). The barrier is composed of a translucent shimmering energy that encapsulates New York City, arcing 10,000 feet above its tallest building and along the city's borders, even out to sea.
It can be permeated by natural, scientific, and magical energies but it is not broken by them. No human being can cross the barrier to leave the city, although it can be entered from the outside. The side of the barrier within the city is unyieldingly solid to any human being who tries to cross it. Hot to the touch, its energy causes an uncomfortable shock to deter direct contact with it. Super-humans with abilities that might allow them to create energy portals to escape find this ability nullified by the energy of the barrier, but other energies simply pass right through. Non-humans and animals can pass through either side, and the barrier has not interrupted natural forces of the earth like wind, water, air, or weather. Solid objects can cross the barrier as well, making it possible for those trapped in the city to continue living with modern conveniences and some normalcy.
The wormholes opening around the city share the same energy signature as the dome barrier. These rifts originate from the arrival into our world of what S.H.I.E.L.D. has labelled "dimensional event catalysts" (or D.E.C.s). These objects are irregularly shaped and made of an unidentifiable metal that radiates heat and colorful energy. D.E.C.s range from the size of a marble to the size of a sedan. D.E.C.s either fall through smaller dimensional fractures, or remain within alternate universes beyond larger rifts. There are different types of wormholes that have varying effects on the city. One of the earliest rift-related catastrophes was a rift that appeared above Coney Island, pouring out horrible monstrous creatures, and then quickly disappearing. The monsters kept coming, usually heralded by the plummet of a D.E.C. into the city, but these rifts have closed too quickly for exploration of the plane that spawns the monsters. Another short-lived kind of fracture simply drops a D.E.C. into the city where it initiates a strange phenomena. These events are usually contained to small areas of New York and, though disruptive to daily life, they rarely last long. Other wormholes stay open much longer and are stable enough allow for the exploration of the dimensions and worlds beyond.
All types of wormholes appear with varying frequency, though the monsters seem to fall through most often. More sporadically, the large and stable breaches into other universes appear. These places seem to be simply part of the route that D.E.C.s take on their way to our universe, getting stuck there before they can land in ours, but still opening a portal into this world. The ultimate purpose of these catalysts is unknown as, like dud bombs, some don't initiate phenomena within the city, but all serve to open portals. No matter their function, New York City seems to be the intended final destination for these wormhole-generating objects.
Super-humans in the World
Super-humans are a relatively new phenomena on Earth, only really revealing themselves to humanity at large in the last few decades. Mutants exist in this universe, too, but also kept their existence quiet until more recently. People are more used to the idea of Super-humans, thanks in part to the efforts of super heroes to show that they can be helpful rather than frightening. However, the advent of super-humans has brought greater danger into the world with the rise of super-villains and new disasters of increasingly strange and terrible magnitude.
Teams and Organizations
S.H.I.E.L.D.: The Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate is an extra-governmental counter-terrorism and espionage agency under the jurisdiction of the World Security Council. It's current director is Colonel Nicholas Fury. The directorate often handles super-human and terrorist threats, and conducts special espionage missions throughout the world. S.H.I.E.L.D. employs assassins, superheroes, spies, and regular agents and liaises with the military and other super-human groups. Although the New York City barrier trapped many high ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel, including its director, others have stepped in at S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Washington D.C. headquarters to continue operations. On the helicarrier docked in New York's harbor, resources have been turned towards researching the wormholes in the hope of finding a way to close them for good.
A.R.M.O.R.: A defunct S.H.I.E.L.D. project resurrected soon after the barrier went up around the city, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s New York branch has devoted its resources to funding a system that can predict the appearance and length of impending wormholes while identifying D.E.C. energy readings. These teams are made up of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and any super heroes who volunteer or are recruited for missions. When high energy signals are reported, A.R.M.O.R. teams are dispatched into the alternate universes beyond the wormholes to retrieve D.E.C.s. The teams also fight wormhole monsters and collect D.E.C.s that fall through dimensional tears to disrupt the city. Nick Fury personally oversees A.R.M.O.R. operations.
H.Y.D.R.A.: A criminal, terrorist, paramilitary organization trying to dominate the Earth. HYDRA has infiltrated governments and important organizations the world over, including (unbeknownst to its director) S.H.I.E.L.D. One of H.Y.D.R.A.'s heads, as well as many of its agents, were trapped by the barrier, but that hasn't stopped their subversive activities within New York City, trying to undermine attempts to disperse the dome and figuring out how to use the wormhole phenomena to their advantage. H.Y.D.R.A. sees the New York problem as an opportunity; with most of the greatest super-powered threats to their supremacy preoccupied and contained, the many-headed beast is waiting for the right time to strike.
The Avengers: The super-hero group was founded in 2011 by Iron Man, the Wasp, Thor, the Hulk and Ant Man with Captain America joining after he was thawed from a block of ice. Their headquarters is the Avengers Mansion on the edge of Central Park. It's current roster includes Iron Man, the Hulk, and Captain America. The Avengers have been working to counter the monstrous threats spewed out by the wormholes constantly opening throughout the city.
Stark Enterprises: The international leader in scientific and technological advances led by Tony Stark. Historically a munitions development superpower, currently focuses on cutting edge robotics, micro-technology, innovative electrical solutions and scientific exploration. Since the appearance of the barrier over and wormholes throughout the city, Stark Enterprises has been part of the ongoing initiative to
fuck this shit up understand, explore, and eliminate them.
Knightwing Restorations: A bail bonds business founded by Misty Knight and Colleen Wing. The pair specialize in posting bail for, and bounty hunting, the kind of super powered criminals and bail jumpers other bail bonds agents can't handle. The pair has also branched out into monster-hunting on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s payroll since the onset of the New York wormholes.
Alias Investigations: Private Investigative firm with a sole proprietor, the prickly Jessica Jones. Jessica is a detective who takes cases great and small; from photographing your spouse's indiscretions, to investigating super-human shenanigans (which she is uniquely qualified to handle). Enter at your own risk.
-Tony Stark has created a system with Damage Control that allows people to contact heroes whenever there's trouble. This works as an app downloadable to devices, that allows people to receive alerts about problems around the city so that heroes nearby can respond.
-Coney Island, razed after the first frantic battle with other-dimensional monsters, has become a wasteland and now a refugee colony established by Immortal Weapon Li Hua, Tiger's Beautiful Daughter.
-The Raft prison was caught under the barrier, and now the people of the city are in more danger if its horrible and super-powered population were ever to escape the prison's boundaries.
